Building A Solid Relationship Despite Distance

Nurturing, much less, keeping a relationship alive takes more than just emotions – it takes effort as well. It even takes twice as much effort especially if you are miles apart from each other.

Long distance relationships are not for the weak hearted. Even the saying that absence makes the heart grow fonder may not always be true. In fact, it can even make you fall out, especially when there is a lack of trying. If you are not up for the challenges that this type of relationship comes with, then the relationship is more likely to fail. Here are some ways long distance lovers can follow to keep the closeness alive despite the distance.

Communication. Good, constant communication is the most important aspect in any relationship, especially when it’s long distance. With so many ways to communicate today, there is just no excuse to keep in touch with your partner especially that you cannot be there for each other physically. Apart from e-mails, telephone and the good ol’ snail mail, modern technology has helped to keep communication even closer with the advent of webcam chat and instant messaging services, which allow long distance lovers to communicate more easily with each other face to face.

Trust. Trust issues may surface between couples in long distance relationships. Trust is the bedrock of a solid relationship, whether long distance or not. No relationship can work if there is no trust, and this is especially true in long distance relationships, since you cannot be there to check up on each other at any given time of the day.

It is important for long distance lovers to agree on what they expect in

their relationship whilst they are away from each other. There are some couples who agree on the possibility of casually dating other people as long as they are emotionally exclusive. No matter how you would like your setup to be like, make sure that both of you agree on it, trust your partner and do what you can to keep his/her trust as well.

Creativity. Make your partner feel that you are near no matter how far you may be from each other by sending hand-written love letters or flowers. Use your creative juices to make it more special and interesting. For instance, you can mesh it up with other personalized items such as your recent pictures, CDs, sweet notes or what-have-you that depict treasured moments between you and your flame.

Reunite. If you really aim to make your relationship work and go long term, consider making occasional visits to your partner.  This can help solidify your long distance relationship. Moreover, this is also essential for both parties to be on the same page from the start.

Keep it real. Sure, it may be easy to keep the ‘honeymoon’ phase going even if you only get to see your special someone once for, say, every six months. But you also need to be prepared for possible twists and turns that may get in the way of your relationship so you can be able to handle it well together even while you are apart. You do not always have to make your reunions as grandiose just because you barely get to see each other. Give your visits some downtime. If your partner is more than happy to just hang with you, then your relationship just might have what it takes to go the extra mile.

Your relationship can go the distance if both of you work it. Long distance relationships can work if both of you believe that you can and have the heart to make it work.

Yes having a long distance relationship is not easy to maintain. It takes really considerable effort just to make alive and working. I constantly make phone calls to my gf that is working far from my place; in this way she won't feel being distant from me.

I agree with you Melgrace, having a long distance relationship is quite hard. You must have constant communication and trust if you want your relationship to be alive. Great article by the way...
